Ever notice when you wish to express some of your experiences learned over a lifetime to some people - they become ever irate? They pick apart what you are attempting to convey, and then attempt to berate you. Some groups and sites exhibit this aberration of good sense. Some members, who are often close knit from the beginning instead of visualizing your view as presented, work hard to demoralize you!

The shame of these attitudes often sends good people away, who could have brought much to the attainment of the group. We as a couple strongly feel that all views should be carefully analyzed while remembering that individual views may be geographically pertinent to that person.

We on the other hand enjoy a good challenge and debate, being a Bull headed American male. Oh we can, have, and will freely admit to being wrong at times, but you must prove it to us first. Just the idea of name calling, belittlement, or accusations hold little iron from those few.

We remain steadfast in our overall view that: most people on these sites enjoy the camaraderie and friendship associated herein. We hope that the few bad apples amongst us who believe these sites are theirs and theirs alone will eventually be banished or jut rot away under their own foul smell

We hope that the good people in the D/S community share our thoughts and wish to dispose of the trash which places itself above all others. We personally know many friends who share our thoughts, and hope that they too will take a stand to better our tribes, and other sites by shunning these few.

It has been our great pleasure to meet with and enjoy the many people in the D/S community for over 35 years. We do our finest to attempt to bring honest, precise and reliable information to the forefront. We practice safety and safe play, and have never engaged in unsafe practices! Our future and the future of D/S lies in the honest portrayal of information to the newbie’s who wish to ask and learn. Without these new people of all races, creeds, religions and age - we as a community will fade away as the sands of time or WORSE be then regulated by our own governments.

As you yourself finish reading our post - ask yourself these questions: How many times have you read comments on this or other sites which actually do little to better our community? How many times have you yourself been lambasted by the few who call a group/tribe their own and berate anyone who brings new life to that entity? Most people on these sites are bringing with them a formal education, these are the facts. However, some educated people can become liars, cheats and schemers, who hide behind the net for no other purpose than to criticize, demoralize or berate you.

Do not be one of them!

Budget-strapped Chicago public schools to implement staggered class schedules
By Clement Daly and Naomi Spencer
7 April 2009

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/apr2009/educ-a07.shtml

A consequence of dozens of public school closings in the past few years, suburban Chicago’s Lockport Township High School has introduced a two-shift school day. In an effort to alleviate chronic overcrowding, school officials have moved to implement a staggered schedule for the nearly 4,000 students on the township’s two campuses.

Nearly 800 junior and senior students now begin the school day at 6:50 a.m. The currently voluntary schedule will become mandatory next year, when all juniors and seniors will be required to start school at 6:44 a.m.

Under the plan, juniors and seniors can start at 6:50 a.m. and be eligible to finish the day as early as 11:45 a.m. for seniors and 1:44 p.m. for juniors. Freshmen and sophomores will not be able to complete classes until 3:44 p.m.

Notwithstanding the personal strain borne by the students, teachers, coaches, administrators, as well as their families, the new scheduling has disrupted life at the high school in general. Extracurricular activities and sports have been limited as a result, while school assemblies have been scrapped outright.

The challenges facing Lockport are by no means unique to the township; neither is their early-bird and staggered schedule scheme. In nearby Frankfort, the 4,100-student Lincoln-Way East High School introduced a 7 a.m. start time prior to the completion of the school district’s third school earlier this year. Similarly, in neighboring Plainfield, the school day began at 7:20 a.m. at Plainfield Central High School until the opening of a fourth school in the district this year.

The transformation of the school day points to a deepening crisis in the public education system. Urban—and, increasingly, suburban—school districts throughout the US have been subjected to cuts in funding and pressure to replace crumbling public schools with small, privately administered schools. As a result, remaining public school districts like Lockport Township have seen a swelling of their student populations even as their budgets and staffing levels are attacked.

Recent estimates from the Chicago Public Schools (CPS) put the school district’s budget deficit at $475 million for 2010. Having drawn down its reserves by $100 million to cover this year’s shortfall, no further funds from the reserve will be available without affecting the district’s bond rating. Outside of a rise in Chicago property taxes, the burden of the shortfall will be passed on to the district’s teachers, officials, retirees, and students.

Newly appointed CPS chief Ron Huberman made this clear when he recently pointed to the $145 million for contractual pay increases for teachers, the $130 million for higher pension contributions, the $30 million to cover rising healthcare costs, and the $35 million for miscellaneous expenses such as utilities, transportation, and fuel as reasons for the deficit. School district officials have also announced that they will be looking at costs associated with workers’ compensation, substitute teachers, and Central Office operations to help balance the budget for the next fiscal year that begins on July 1.

“Let me be clear. We do not believe that we can balance next year’s budget through efficiencies and management improvements alone. We need to find new revenues,” Huberman said in a public statement last month.

On April 6, the Chicago Tribune reported that Illinois Governor Pat Quinn was advocating “sweeping changes” to cut the education shortfall, including “reducing pension benefits for incoming teachers and requiring existing ones to pay 2 percent more of their paychecks toward retirement.” Illinois teachers already contribute 9.4 percent of their salaries toward the Teachers Retirement System fund. Quinn estimated the change would allow the state to reduce its payments to the pension fund by $443 million next year.

Governor Quinn has also proposed cutting more than 30 grant programs, including after-school tutoring programs and those aimed at reducing class sizes, in order to cut state education costs by $200 million.

This new round of attacks on the living standards of teachers, students, and school officials will be bound up with the continuation of Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley’s Renaissance 2010 initiative. The plan has resulted in the closure and consolidation of dozens of schools since 2004, with 16 more to be affected this coming fall.

What at first appears to be a glaring contradiction between suburban school districts that are overcrowded and under-resourced, and the continued drive by the CPS to close and consolidate dozens of city schools for low enrollment and under-performance, is in fact the logical outcome of the same process: the increasing subjugation of social institutions such as education to the profit motive. The irrational and anarchic means by which the market allocates social resources thus produces such contradictions.

However, the crisis confronting Chicago-area schools is only a piece of the rapidly worsening national economic crisis that is impacting the education system at large.

A survey of 850 administrators across 48 states, issued March 24 by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), suggests that the vast majority of schools are facing swelling class sizes, staff layoffs and program cuts. Some 75 percent of respondents characterized their school districts as “inadequately funded”; 21 percent said they had undertaken “short-term borrowing to meet payroll and accounts payable.”

Administrators reported that in the 2009-2010 school year, 44 percent of schools were increasing class size, 28 percent were cutting extracurricular activities, 22 percent were cutting academic programs, and one-third were putting off needed maintenance.

The percentage of schools laying off staff quadrupled from an already high 11 percent in the 2008-2009 school year, to 44 percent in 2009-2010. Administrators also identified nearly 17,600 jobs that have been “slated for elimination in the 2009-10 school year.” The AASA report notes, “This represents a small portion of the 574,000 jobs that researchers have predicted for elimination in FY09, FY10, and FY11.”

The Obama administration has seized upon this crisis as a pretext for an all-out assault on public education. The Obama stimulus package will provide about $100 billion for public schools, universities, and early childhood education over the next two years. The figure falls far short of what is needed. Indeed, statements by Education Secretary Arne Duncan make clear that the political establishment sees the desperate state of affairs as an opportunity to enact a vast restructuring of the nation’s public education.

Last week Duncan—the former head of the Chicago school system—widely touted the government’s $44 billion in “stimulus” funds earmarked for the education system, plus a plan to put aside $5 billion as an incentive for financially desperate school districts.

Duncan has made clear that the funds are contingent on the pursuit of various right-wing reforms, including drastically extending the school day and/or year for disadvantaged children, so-called merit pay programs for teachers, and enforcement of testing standards introduced under the Bush administration. Duncan has also aggressively pushed for increased public funding for privately administered charter schools.

The nature of such reforms indicates who is to be held accountable for the nation’s deteriorating public educational institutions: the teachers, administrators, and students. Duncan warned that the Obama administration will “come down like a ton of bricks” on districts that do not comply with these policy aims.

By Clement Daly
16 March 2009

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/mar2009/chic-m16.shtml

Reflecting the worsening impact of the economic crisis on working class families in the Chicago area, on March 9 hundreds of students were pulled out of classes at a single high school on the city's Southside due to outstanding tuition bills. Of the 300 students sent home, at least 100 were being kept out of school until their tuition was paid up or an agreement was reached between parents and Marian Catholic High School, the Chicago Tribune reported March 11.

The Chicago Heights school reported a total of $450,000 in outstanding student tuition. Delinquent payments were reportedly between $750 (one month's tuition) and $5,000.

Despite the Internet and phone outages over the weekend, which prevented parents from making last-minute payments before the March 9 deadline, the students were callously pulled from classes in front of their peers. The humiliated students then had to form a line at the offices until their parents could be contacted. In some cases, students were only behind on a single $750 installment of the $8,000 yearly tuition at Marian.

While it is not uncommon for families with students at parochial schools to fall on hard times, the situation was noteworthy for its scale and the school's drastic response. "Never before had we ever had so many parents struggle with so much difficulty in paying," Marian Catholic President Judine Hilbing told the Chicago Tribune. "It was very uncomfortable," she told the paper. "Not having access to the technology almost made it impossible. We are very apologetic to the parents. We tried to treat them with respect and dignity, but it was difficult."

The scene at Marian this week offers insight into the impoverishment of what was once a better-off layer of the working class in the Chicago area.

Amid the deteriorating Chicago Public Schools, and the increased violence which has come to characterize their social environment, a significant layer of Chicago's working class families sacrifice and spend what little disposable income they have on a private education for their children. This tradition is proving untenable amid the current economic crisis.

In an effort to mitigate a rapid decline projected in Catholic school enrollment this year, the Chicago Archdiocese announced last month the availability of $1 million emergency aid fund for families that lost jobs this school year. Significantly, within days, requests for financial help overwhelmed the Archdiocese. The initial $1,000 payments had to subsequently be reduced to a $500 tuition subsidy.

In addition, the Archdiocese of Chicago has issued a pay freeze, scheduled to begin at the start of next fiscal year on July 1, for most of its 16,000 employees. The freeze is expected to affect almost 90 percent of the Archdiocese's 3,800 elementary school teachers and administrators. Less affected will be the area's 39 Catholic high schools associated with the Archdiocese. Because these high schools are typically run by individual religious orders, only six are mandated to follow the pay freeze.

According to Brian Gray, a spokesman for the National Catholic Educational Association, enrollment in Catholic institutions has been steadily declining on its own about 3 percent per year. While the full force of the deepening economic crisis is yet to be seen, enrollment will undoubtedly surpass these rates.

Chicago: 16 more public schools slated for closures, cuts
By Clement Daly
28 February 2009

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/feb2009/chic-f28.shtml

Chicago school officials voted on Wednesday to close, consolidate, or vastly restructure 16 public schools beginning in the fall. The decision reflects not only the devastating impact of the economic crisis on the public school system, but also the efforts of the Democrat-dominated political establishment to replace publicly funded education with private, for-profit schools.

The Chicago Public School (CPS) district is the third largest school system in the US, serving some 408,000 students in 650 schools. In the past few years, over 60 of the city's public schools have been shuttered, forcing thousands of families to transport their children to schools outside of their communities or turn to newly opened charter schools. With the latest round of cuts, more than 10 percent of the city's public schools will have been closed in the past eight years.

The closures are part of the CPS's "Renaissance 2010" initiative, through which city officials have aggressively pursued the development of charter schools, along with attacks on teachers' wages and job security. Some of the most impoverished areas of the city have borne the brunt of the closings, while they have received little in the way of improved facilities.

Since 2005, 76 new schools have been created or transformed according to the Renaissance 2010 plan—43 charter schools, 25 performance schools, and 8 contract schools. More than a third of these Renaissance schools are in 18 communities not considered to be top priority. Ten communities have seen no new Renaissance schools.

The Bush administration's No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation in 2001 set the stage for the development of Renaissance 2010 plan, introduced in June 2004. The plan calls for the creation of 100 new schools by 2010 through closures and "transformations" of schools with low enrollment or deemed as underperforming. The closed schools are replaced with smaller, charter schools, the majority of which are not only exempt from some of the state's regulations, but refuse to hire union members as well.

The principles of the plan follow closely those laid out in a report entitled, Left Behind: Student Achievement in Chicago's Public Schools. The report was produced in July 2003 by the Commercial Club of Chicago, an historic group of Chicago's most wealthy and powerful capitalists founded in 1877. Less than a year latter, Chicago's Democratic Mayor Richard M. Daley heeded the advice through the Renaissance 2010 initiative.

What the NCLB legislation, Left Behind, and the Renaissance 2010 initiative all share is a contempt for everything not subordinated to the principles of the free market and subjugated to the profit motive, an ignorance of the social reality faced by millions of working Americans, and a cynical attempt to hold teachers, administrators, students and parents accountable for the collapse of public education.

The closure of underperforming schools, many of which are located in the most impoverished sections of the city, has been bound up with Daley's overall drive at the gentrification of these areas. Coupled with the destruction of public housing projects and spiraling rent rates in these areas, the school closings are forcing low-income residents out of the city.

The displacement resulting from the school closures has had a devastating effect on students and teachers alike. One study conducted by Catalyst, an independent publication that follows school reform issues, found that only 2 percent of the students who were displaced by school closings were enrolled the next fall in new Renaissance schools.

Furthermore, nearly half of the displaced students landed at schools that were on academic probation. To address this crisis, the CPS has implemented a so-called turnaround strategy, which merely allows students to stay while the district carries out wholesale firings of staff and shuffles in new teachers and principals.

In an attempt to delay Wednesday's scheduled vote, the Grassroots Education Movement has released the results of two recent studies, one of which has found that Latino and African-American students have been most affected by the school closures. In addition, the newly founded charter high schools were found to enroll fewer low-income students, nearly half as many limited English speakers, and "significantly fewer" students with special needs than the neighborhood high schools. Other reports indicate a lack of representative diversity in the magnet schools, the district's most-established schools of choice.

According to the CPS, in the 2007-2008 school year a staggering 83.6 percent of Chicago public school students come from low-income families. The intensification of the economic crisis since then has no doubt exacerbated the financial distress felt by the city's working class families, pushing more into poverty, foreclosure, and unemployment. One indication of the increasing social misery facing these students is expressed in the recent revelation that at least 10,642 public school kids in Chicago are homeless (See "Over ten thousand public school students homeless in Chicago")

According to the Consortium on Chicago School Research, which tracks individual students, just over half—55 percent—of CPS high school students graduated in 2008. In 2007, less than one third of those who graduated enrolled in college.

Recent years have also seen the city's students engulfed in an explosion of violence. Last school year saw 26 city students killed, 23 of which died from gunshot wounds. The lives of an additional 12 CPS students were taken in violence over the summer. Following the recent string of fights and shootings at sporting events, the CPS now requires all varsity games to be played no later than 4 p.m. as well as the pre-approval of all visiting fans by the host school.

It is within this context of deterioration and chaos that Daley recently appointed Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) President Ron Huberman to replace outgoing Chicago Public School's chief Arne Duncan as the new CEO of the CPS. Duncan left to become President Obama's US Education Secretary.

Daley's appointment of Huberman has been criticized by residents and educational leaders as being politically motivated. Like Duncan, the politically connected Huberman will take over one of the biggest public school systems in the country without having any previous professional experience in education. Before his appointment to the CTA, Huberman was a police officer in the Chicago Police Department, rising to the rank of assistant deputy superintendent.

Duncan's departure raised the hope among many Chicagoans that a new executive officer would break with corporate-style administration policies in general, and the controversial Renaissance 2010 initiative in particular. However, it is clear that Daley appointed Huberman as a reliable successor to Duncan, one who will oversee the completion of the plan.

Faced with widespread opposition from parents, students, and teachers to the latest round of school closures, Huberman announced on Tuesday that the CPS was removing six schools from the list of those targeted. Officials explained that the schools had been evaluated incorrectly in terms of enrollment and space utilization.

In light of the decision, questions naturally arise as to the evaluations of the dozens of other schools that have been closed since 2001. How many other schools have been ‘misevaluated'?

According to CPS data, since 2002, 32 schools have been forced to close after being characterized as underutilized by the district, which calculates potential classroom capacity by an absurdly high 30:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Philo Carpenter Elementary, one of the schools that remains slated for closure by September, was evaluated by the CPS as having a space utilization rate of only 23 percent. However, a study released earlier this month from the University of Illinois-Chicago found that the district's assessment did not take into account the government-mandated class-size limits for the nearly 100 students with disabilities at the school who receive special services. Nor did the CPS consider the space required to teach the high proportion of students learning English as a second language as being adequately utilized. The school has a high percentage of hearing-impaired students and an integrated arts program that the UIC study described as a "model of inclusion."

The UIC study points out that the schools into which disabled students will be shuffled have not been equipped to accommodate them: "The proposed receiving schools are not equipped in the same ways to serve Carpenter's students with disabilities and are likely to impinge on students' lawful rights to a quality education in the least restrictive environment... the utilization report makes no mention of the financial expenditures that will be necessary to accommodate these students in any proposed receiving schools."

"Research shows that small school size and a caring community are elements that contribute positively to student success," the study notes. "It seems that CPS is proposing to close the very type of school that it claims communities should strive for."

The full UIC report, "Data and Democracy Project: Investing in Neighborhoods—Examining CPS' plan to close, phase out, consolidate, turn-around 22 schools" is available here in PDF: http://www.uic.edu/cuppa/voorheesctr/DataAndDemocracyRelease.pdf

Refuse Corporate Donations: A Plea To The Other Candidates in Illinois's 5th District

by Matt Reichel

Something must be done to cleanse the American political system and instill some degree of integrity in the nation’s democratic institutions.

As fraudsters and hustlers from Bernard Madoff to Rod Blagojevich fall like dominoes, in the footsteps of Bernie Ebbers, Kenneth Lay and Dan Rostenkowski, one can say that confidence in the good old American way is beginning to wane. While apathy towards politics has been a mainstay of the American consciousness for decades, the overall sense of despair in the air is probably at record highs.

Those who believed in the American political system framed this a fall of hope, but unfortunately winter arrived early and relentlessly. In Chicago, multiple snow and ice storms coupled with vicious winds brought the mid-western metropolis its most unbearable December in recent memory. When winter officially began on Sunday, wind chills dipped as low as –30 F: that brand of cold that is determined to slice through all defenses you throw at it. Meanwhile, the Blago circus came to town: the over-charismatic executive, teetering through the worst approval rating in Illinois gubernatorial history, failed to heed warnings of when enough was enough.

Reports indicate that he thought $1.5 million was a just price for Obama’s senate seat: a relative bargain in these days of neo-liberal hegemony. One could hardly get elected to the U.S. House with that kind of cash. In fact, the seat that used to be Blago’s, currently occupied by incoming Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel, could very well cost around $1.5 million for the Chicago machinist most intent on calling it theirs. Emanuel himself spent $1.88 million getting re-elected this last time around, despite the lack of any viable opposition in either round.

In the coming special election, still yet to be officially announced because Emanuel hasn’t resigned, the total number of announced candidates is 18 and climbing. Every interested state rep, senator and alderman in the Chicago area has begun flexing their muscle, organizing their political apparatus, and using corporate press clout to promote their candidacies. The talk around town is not where the candidates stand on the issues, or where they lie along the political spectrum, but rather who’s got the goods to win the race.

And last I checked it isn’t only in Chicago where political livelihood is entirely dependent on support from corporate crooks. Despite all of the euphoria of early November, Obama is a prime representation of the fact that one can never win the White House by challenging the reprehensible actions of the nation’s largest banks, investors and lenders. Instead you have to allow them to donate generously to your campaign and then to dictate your economic policies.

While Obama was giving his spiel about hope and change repeatedly for two years, he was concurrently amassing an unprecedented war chest, thrust along by at least $2 million from entities directly involved in the sub-prime swindle: Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, UBS and Lehman Brothers. Despite Obama framing his candidacy as the one closer to the interests of the people, his rake from all of the above was considerably greater than McCain’s.

Corporate America realized early that Obama was the likely victor and that they had to move to ensure that he was thoroughly corrupted, and wouldn’t use the economic malaise as an excuse to begin regulating the financial sector. In following Obama’s purse strings, it is clear that he will likely do nothing to protect Americans from crony Capitalism. Citibank, currently under investigation for its involvement in derivative fraud and managing to make $1.2 trillion disappear from its balance sheets, was one of Obama’s biggest donors: with nearly $400,000 being given from its employees to the Senator in the first half of 2008 alone.

At just the time when the country needs to forcibly remove these crooked corporations from the political arena, they are as deeply ingrained as ever. Just when the congress must absolutely restore monetary sanity by re-instituting the Glass-Steagall act and reversing decades of rampant deregulation and privatization, the president will be doing the bidding of the same investment banks that gave us the housing bubble. And just as the American public begins to digest the enormity of said bubble, “our president” will assuredly be another loyal servant of Wall Street.

The foundations will only tremble when Americans pledge to support no candidate who accepts donations of any kind from corporations. When we can be sure that our public servants are clean of the crud of monied interests, we can then begin to have a grand discourse about hope and change.

The place to begin is right in Blago’s backyard, where the governor’s godchildren are busily positioning themselves to be the chosen successor to the seat once held by the man himself. This post won’t be sold, surely enough, but it probably will be bought. Given the district’s history of electing illicit political criminals, there’s no reason to think that the hounds won’t be let loose on the candidates.

Will any of them pledge to refuse corporate donations this time around? Will they rise above the easy route of accepting large sums of money from those interests intent on preying on the poor, de-unionizing workers, and instituting a perpetual culture of indebtedness?

I hereby demand it of them. I demand that each of the candidates sign onto this pledge to refuse all corporate donations. I ask that they run on the issues, and win by talking to constituents about their concerns, desires and wishes. In so doing, I dream that the victor will be “our congressperson” and not another soul-less pawn of big business.

I have thrown my hat into the ring of candidates because I would like to see my dream of a clean political system become reality. I have grown frustrated over years of dwindling social movements and increased state coercion of civil society. The dictatorship of corporate America, which is currently in shambles, must be swept away and replaced by a respectful liberal democracy. The first step is getting the fraudsters and hustlers out of politics, and replacing them with public servants who pledge to represent the interest of the working majority.

Will any of the other candidates in this special election rise to the occasion and work with me towards creating a more just nation?
For the health of our democracy, it is what must be done.

Removal of Illinois governor leaves unanswered questions
By Patrick Martin
31 January 2009

http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/jan2009/blag-j31.shtml

The swift removal of Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich from office, only 51 days after his arrest in Chicago on corruption charges, raises many questions, both political and legal. He is the second governor of a major state—following fellow Democrat Elliot Spitzer of New York 10 months ago—to be forced out of office after a media fusillade sparked by electronic surveillance conducted by federal authorities.

There is no doubt that Blagojevich is a corrupt and venal politician, like the vast majority of the governors, senators, congressmen and state and big-city politicians in the United States, including the Illinois state senators, Democratic and Republican, who voted by 59-0 to remove him from office Thursday.

The case against Blagojevich, however, both as presented to the Illinois legislature and as outlined by prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald in a lengthy criminal complaint filed last December 9, is neither coherent nor convincing, and lacks key supporting evidence.

What, for example, was the crime for which Blagojevich was removed from office? The alleged sale of Barack Obama's seat in the US Senate, the focus of most media attention, was never consummated. No exchange of favors or money for the appointment ever took place, in large part because Fitzgerald staged the highly publicized arrest in what was apparently an effort to preempt the alleged action.

Blagojevich's discussions with various aides and political cronies, however embarrassing to his fellow politicians—given that it reveals the money-grubbing mindset that dominates capitalist politics—were not in themselves criminal acts. More than mere appetite is required: There has to be specific intent and overt actions in support of that intent, which Fitzgerald's intervention forestalled.

Several of the charges brought by the Illinois state senate were not criminal at all, but overtly political, and of a reactionary character. For instance, Blagojevich is charged with exceeding his authority as governor by expanding state-subsidized medical care for the poor, buying flu vaccines from Canada for statewide distribution, and taking other actions of a similar character not specifically approved and financed by the legislature.

The most serious charges involve Blagojevich's "pay-to-play" schemes, in which the governor exchanged administrative appointments and state contracts for campaign contributions. The only evidence presented to back up these counts, however, consisted of four excerpts of recorded conversations, totaling six minutes, culled from tens of thousands of hours of surveillance tapes.

There is no question that Blagojevich, like every Illinois governor of the past century, used his control over state government to generate campaign contributions. He admitted as much in his lengthy closing argument at Thursday's final session of the state Senate trial, seeming to taunt the senators, saying: "You heard those four tapes. I don't have to tell you what they say. You guys are in politics. You know what we have to do to go out and run elections."

The legal proceedings against Blagojevich are highly dubious. Fitzgerald ordered the arrest and made inflammatory public statements against the governor, denouncing what he called "a corruption crime spree," but failed to bring an indictment within the required time, an indication that the evidentiary basis of the charges was weak. The prosecutor was compelled to request an unusual three-month extension from the federal court, which was duly granted.

At the same time, Fitzgerald told the legislature that it should not summon witnesses for the impeachment and trial of Blagojevich who might be required for a criminal prosecution. The state House and Senate, while not legally bound to do so, bent over backwards to honor Fitzgerald's request, in the name of avoiding any action that might "spoil" the subsequent criminal case.

The result was a legal Catch 22. Without an indictment on specific charges, it could not be determined which witnesses would be required, so nearly all witnesses were excluded from the Senate trial. The governor was effectively denied the right to present witnesses who might give exculpatory testimony, such as Obama's chief of staff and former Illinois congressman, Rahm Emanuel. In his closing argument, Blagojevich complained that he had been denied the presumption of innocence and the right to cross-examine witnesses.

The timing of the arrest raises the most important political questions. Fitzgerald accomplished two things on December 9. First, he prevented any actual sale of the Obama seat, which would have implicated not only Blagojevich, but the purchaser of the appointment as well. (The normal practice in such a white-collar crime would be to allow the transaction to take place and then arrest both parties, having been caught in the act).

Secondly, Fitzgerald made a highly publicized exoneration of Obama himself, releasing transcripts of Blagojevich cursing the president-elect and his aides for not offering him anything in return for the Senate appointment, which he had apparently dangled in front of Obama confidante Valerie Jarrett.

It thus appears that the principal concern of Fitzgerald, as well as of the corporate-controlled media, may have been to insure that Obama himself and his circle of top aides were cleared of any association with the mushrooming Blagojevich scandal.

One commentator, Bill Briscoe at Congressional Quarterly, characterized the impeachment trial of Blagojevich as "an unconstitutional exercise conducted by a political leadership that decided on an outcome and then went in search of an argument to justify it."

He noted that from the time of Fitzgerald's press conference on December 9, leading Democrats in Illinois had decided that the governor had to go and embarked on a series of legal and political maneuvers to accomplish that goal: first pressuring Blagojevich to resign, then asking the state Supreme Court to declare him "unfit" for office, then awaiting Fitzgerald's expected indictment, and when that did not materialize, moving to impeachment.

ive been such a powerhouse today, i came back to chicago on july 29. i spent 2 days at my parents house helping my mom heal her leg and then i went back home to the city to pack, clean, organize, etc. and i found myself lost for what to do first. crazy shit. scattered. i also found myself realizing that i wasnt willing to spend the money i had saved through working at the house of blues for three and a half years on living, but only on traveling which became the source of my commitment to make money while im in chicago. but how? so this is august 1. so, i was taking a load to my parents house a few days later and i found so much artwork at their house in their basement that i freaked. i took it all home and photographed it. i want to tell you that since ive been in chicago, i have made (and not spent, i think i spent about $100 of the cash ive made, but i cant say with confidence the exact number) $1035 without having what we call a job! how cool is that?! by selling art on the street, selling art out of my backpack in buildings, getting bad debts paid back, selling furniture, collecting a paycheck from the house of blues, etc. and i feel awesome! also, i made a huge difference today in someones life. a deaf man came to me and asked me for $8.75 to get on the metra. i know this man from my old waitressing job at the house of blues cuz he used to come in and eat and sometimes one of us would get him free food and sometimes hed pay and sometimes id just talk to him, and so, i thought about giving him money. and then i doubted his truths and instead i pulled out $5 and asked him to get the rest from someone else. and he (he says that he talks to me cuz i understand him and no one else seems to. i kind of get sign language, but more importantly i get humans when they speak, no matter the language, right?!) so, he then told me he didnt want trouble with the law or trouble with people or to look like he was asking someone for money, cuz hes not that guy. so i got enrolled with him and went to a someone i know who works at the house of blues and she said no. then we went to the security guard and asked her if she had $3.75, she said no. so i asked if shed mind if we asked other people in the hob area, she said no. so we went to the first next person who introduced us to his friend whos name is Chris, who then said, $375???? and we laughed, and said, no, $3.75 and he said, "hell, ill do that for god" and pulled out a $20 and said "now you have extra money, use it to help someone else and know that i didnt do this, she didnt do this, jesus or god or whatever god you believe in did this!!!" and hell, that was an act of something powerful, whatever we call it....it was awesome! im left moved, touched, and inspired.

this is just what happened today! tomorrow is gonna be even bigger! i love big! shit! i love abundance! i love love! how did this day occur and the ones before it you ask. well, im inviting everyone to take a course at landmark education because it is what this day was given by. and furthermore, those of you who live in chicago, im inviting you to an introduction to landmark education. im taking the advanced course right now and it is changing my life. i wanna introduce you to the curriculum because i love you all and i know you will LOVE it and it will make a difference in your life! so. in introducing you to the stuff that is making a huge difference in my life, there are two intro sessions this week. one on tuesday, august 12, and one on wednesday, august 13. both are 7pm-10pm and tuesday is at their building and wednesday is at my house. ill be at both. so, im gonna give you the address for landmark and my address and all that, googlemaps does the most accurate directions out of all the mappers, or at least from the last time i checked. so, yeah...the food that will be at my place will prolly be pizza, unless anyone objects (do you object?). is there anything you dont eat on pizza or in general? since there will be food at my house and a specific number of chairs at landmark, it is imperative that i get confirmations by monday late night for tuesday and by tuesday late night for wednesday so that everything can be set up accordingly.

Every year Oakton Community College’s Ceramics Studio hosts an Empty Bowls event. That means everyone who works at the studio, as well as other area ceramics artists and students, makes and donates a bunch of bowls.

Then on a certain day a lot of people come to Oakton to admire the hundreds of bowls that have been donated. They pay $12, pick a bowl they really like, fill it with soup, grab a hunk of bread, and enjoy—and when they’re finished eating, they get to keep the bowl. There’s also a raffle (tickets are $3, or 4 for $10) and silent auction for some bigger art pieces donated by better known artists. All the proceeds go to local charities; last year $12,000 was raised and donated to the Greater Chicago Food Depository. There will be some tunes by several student bands, including a band called "Patchouli" (the name scares me a bit, but you never know).

This year’s Empty Bowls event will be on December 8th, 2007, from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Oakton Community College, 1600 E. Golf Rd., Des Plaines, IL 60016. The earlier you get there, the better the selection of bowls will be. So come on out and get yourself a nice bowl, and support a good cause while you’re at it!

Here's a photo from last year’s event:
My wife and I are going to be in Chicago the first weekend of November cuz we had some Southwest vouchers that were about to expire, and hell, I've seen enough of Las Vegas and the west coast and we figured we'd do something different. We're burners (built the Blood Vessel art car this year) and enjoy lots of different club scenes, but lean a bit toward the gothic/industral side.

Can anyone recommend clubs or venues to check out? Also, can anyone recommend a decent hotel that's near stuff someone wanting to check out Chicago would want to see?

Were currently looking for any Psy / Goa / trance / good music :) dj's interested in throwing down a set. I believe we'll have both cdj's as well as turn tables ( have to check on that). The party will go till sunrise, so chill dj's are welcome for morning sets too.

Last month over 600 people participated in Chicago's 4th annual World
Naked Bike Ride—way to go!

Several people were talking at, and after, the ride about other naked
events. These kind of events are relatively rare around Chicago, but
they do happen. One problem is that they are often either poorly
publicized or spontaneously thrown together at the last minute (which
is fine, but means you often only hear about them after the fact).

So I started a new Yahoo group to exchange news, ideas and info about
Chicago area clothing optional events.

You can find the new group in Yahoo groups at chicagoclothingoptionalevents

There already are at least 2 nudist organizations in Chicago (the
Chicago Bares, which is oriented for gay men, and the Chicago Sun
Club, which tends to include older people.) But there are also a
number of informal nude gatherings and happenings, such as last
January's Lady Godiva ride in Wicker Park. I'm hoping that news about
such nudist events can spread through this group.

A few other thoughts:
This is NOT meant to be a swinging or sex group—go to Craigslist for
that. I've been to two nudist colonies and a number of nudist events
and have never even SEEN, much less participated in, any sexual
activity at such gatherings. If that's what you're looking for, I
suggest you find another group.

This is also not meant for gawkers or photographers to get a line on
where and when to see a free show. It's intended to be a group for
nudists to publicize naked and clothing optional events, and meet
like-minded people.

So if you're interested, or have info about local nude or clothing
optional events, please join this group post away! If you're spamming
or looking for sex or free shows, please don't bother.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/chicagoclothingoptionalevents/

P.S. I'm not convinced this group will really take off—I'll give it
six months, and if it seems like there aren't any "real" nudists
joining or naked events being discussed then I'll close the group.

Anyone who wants to be, we come from all walks, of life and adhere to a variety of beliefs. We aspire to be a Loving and Caring people toward one another and all the varied hues of our Mother Earth. To that end. we practise non-violence and peace activism, ecologically sound ways of living and respect for all beings, and ways of life. Some folks come to Rainbow for a chance to feel the Living Spirit, some for the fun of it, some for a chance to see those they Love. Most gather for a mixture of these reasons. We laugh, sing, play musical instru- ments, and share our experiences & dreams in our heartsongs. We strive to better ourselves and explore alternative life-styles, medicine, and ways to solve problems. We experience cooperative living. Sometimes we even seem to work a miracle. There are no leaders. Individuals (known as "Focalizers") try to facilitate the consensus of the, Rainbow Tribes on a local and/or national level. We circle for our meals, and councils because we are all equal. Decisions regarding a local family are made by consensus, wherever the need arises. Like at a regional picnic or council. Decision regarding the Rainbow Family of Living Light can only be made on the land, at the main tribunal council, from July 1-7th each year during the Gathering of the Tribes.

Hey, all:

We’re planning Chicago’s version of the World Naked Bike Ride, which will happen on June 9th, 2007. Somewhere between 200 and 500 cyclists will ride through Chicago to protest oil dependency. They’ll sport costumes, body paint, decorated bikes and, if they’re daring, no clothes at all. The ride will last from about 9 pm to about midnight, rain or shine. (For more info, go to: http://www.worldnakedbikeride.org/ or )
www.worldnakedbikeride.org/chicago/)

Two venues are needed:
First, we’ll need an assembly and costuming point where people can painted and decorate themselves and their bikes prior to the ride. This should be a quiet home, backyard or enclosed courtyard, preferably in the Wicker Park/Bucktown/Near North area. The way it works is that we’ll publicize an “assembly point” somewhere near the costuming place (usually a park) and those who show up with bicycles will be sent to the costuming place. Gawkers who show up with cameras but without bikes will be S.O.L.

Second, we need a place to host a post-ride party. Two years ago a friendly person opened up their loft for the 100+ naked and partially clothed people who wanted to party afterwards, but they had to bring their own drinks. Last year we had a party at a local bar, but we were told we had to put our clothing on before entering, which killed the whole spirit of the naked bike ride.

So we’re looking for venues for a post-ride party, ideally that will allow nudity (NOTE: this is a naked but NON-SEXUAL event!) and that can fit 100 to 300 people, and that allows alcohol (better yet, that serves alcohol—a bar, or gallery, would be ideal) Because this is a non-profit organization, we can’t front much, if any, money, but can get quite a crowd into a bar or gallery.

If you’ve any suggestions or can offer a place, please email me at: hippierob@gmail.com

If you’re going to respond with smart-aleck comments, or ask for details about where you can see (but not participate in) the naked bike ride, please don’t bother.

Thanks!

Clara Rose here, an explorer of the mind ready for life's grand experiences... I'm on a bit of quest. My financial situation was quite iffy throuought the beginning of the summer, so I couldn't go to any festivals or shows, even those I was slated as VIP for (I'm a music journalist) due to the cost of travel and "fun". But now, everything's in place again and I'm down to make up for time lost this summer by making it to remaining festies like moe.down and Vegoose. Now on to the question.

Is anyone heading out to moe.down 7 (Sep. 1 - 3) Labor Day Weekend from either Chicago or NYC? If I can find a kind friend to drive out with from my hometown, that'd be optimal and marvelous, but if not I'm going to buy a plane ticket to NYC where hopefully I'll have found someone that's also heading out. I figure the NYC bet may be easier, since the festival is in upstate New York.

I'll pay for half of gas and food and whatever goodies the person is down with. :) I'll also provide more wacky conversation and contagious smiles than a human being can handle. Well, you can probably handle it.

Public Image Enemy is a multidisciplinary celebration featuring artwork, performance, and music which results from the collision and collaboration of Punk Rock and Hip Hop artists.

The art and music, performance, etc. will be a celebration of the 30th anniversaries of punk rock and hip hop cultures.
(We are using these terms in the broad sense, including the sub-genres and side-genres)

We will focus on the places where the two cultures borrow from eachother and / or collaborate with each other. We are interested in hip hop artists that are influenced by punk and punk artists that are influenced by hip hop. Regardless of how much stylistic crossover there is, we are most excited about bringing the two cultures together in one forum.
Artists from each camp who don't normally work with each other have already started collaborating in preparation for this series.
Music & Performance - bringing together breaking, punk/ experimental/ underground music groups, emcees, deejays, beat-boxers, performance art, and more.

I just joined a new Social Network! I know what you are thinking
already... but I promise you, this one is a lot different. Check out
my site at:

http://www.beseencafe.com/rafaelcolorina

In fact, this is unlike any other Social Network out there today.
Why? Because it will be in video! We'll be able to have our own
TV network with live video, video broadcasting, video email,
pay-per-view videos, and so much more!

It is in pre-launch right now and we have an opportunity to
build our community at no cost... oh and by the way, there
will be several ways that we can make earn money from
this new Network!

Again, my site is:
We're looking for a bar that could provide:
-Is centrally located
-Can give us the orivate soace/tutorial from 7-9pm on a Mon, Tues, Wed or Thurs. Night

The instructional portion would include:
-Basic bar etiquette - How to pour beers, which fruit goes with which drink, how to salt a margarita, accurate shot counts/pours
-Then the bartender would run through how to make 5 drinks (Cosmos, Margaritas, Martinis and the like)
-Then there would be 2 spee dstations set up so peopel could come up and try to makew their own drinks (People would try to make no more than 2 different drinks and would use the small 1oz shot cups to sample the drinks.)

"Exactly. No need to be that honest. He didn't care about the girl he fucked, he was just pissed that she blew him off."

"Of course. He still should have kept it to himself though. He was in the clear. He just told her about screwing around to hurt her and to prove he was right. Should have kept that to himself."
